LIVE BACKSTAGE VOCALS:
The Cast of Jesus Christ Superstar

Choreographer's Note

Choreographing Jesus Christ Superstar began as an exciting experience. I was eager to showcase the extraordinary talent of our dancers — song after song, dance after dance, pushing movement to its fullest expression.  But as the process unfolded, something shifted.  In the end, it became less about dance steps and I was left with something far more emotional, stark, and bleak.  We have not evolved as much as we like to believe. We have not learned from history. We indeed have forgotten. And while we forget, power and greed continue to win. Jesus Christ Superstar isn't just a spectacle; it's a reminder — we need to do more, we need to be better.

Director's Note

I rarely use a Director’s Note to explain a production’s vision. Art is meant to be experienced, felt, and interpreted freely. But the level of thought and collaboration that went into this production makes it worth sharing a glimpse of the ideas shaping what you are about to—or have just—witnessed.

When Jesus Christ Superstar first burst onto the scene in 1970, it was radical for presenting the final days of Jesus through a human lens. Its music was loud, emotional, political, and unapologetically contemporary. More than fifty years later, the questions it raises feel even more urgent.

Our production imagines this story within a surreal, authoritarian, media-saturated dystopia inspired by Pink Floyd’s The Wall—a collapsing society where spectacle replaces substance, fear replaces truth, and comfort replaces conscience.  In this world, each character is both themselves and something larger. Jesus represents radical truth—moral clarity in a system addicted to hierarchy and control. His refusal to conform makes him dangerous. Judas becomes the broken mirror of that truth, a believer who now fears its cost. Pilate embodies bureaucratic neutrality, aware of injustice but unwilling to disrupt it, while Caiaphas and Annas represent institutions determined to protect their own power.

Mary Magdalene represents emotional truth—the marginalized voices society often dismisses, yet who see clearly because they have nothing to gain from power. Herod, by contrast, embodies leadership as spectacle, where cruelty becomes entertainment and authority becomes performance.

Around them moves the machinery of The System. Soldiers enforce it. Crowds amplify it. Media feeds it. Even the Devil is not a monster, but a whisper reminding us that corruption is normal and resistance is futile.

Within this world, the crucifixion becomes more than a religious event—it is the ultimate act of institutional self-preservation. Jesus is not executed because he is physically dangerous, but because he exposes the shadows behind the wall—and those shadows fear being seen.  What makes this story unsettling is that the System survives not through villains alone, but through our own comfort, fear and silence.  But there are cracks in the wall—and the hope that someone, somewhere, might still choose courage over comfort.

Casting & The Temple

Some casting choices were intentionally symbolic.

Diego Huerta-Gutierrez’s portrayal of Jesus reflects a figure whose heritage echoes communities currently targeted by immigration crackdowns and deportations in the United States.

Andy Meyers’ Judas represents the conflicted modern American—someone caught between ideological divides, wrestling with uncertainty, fear, and contradiction.

Chess MacElvaine’s (They/Them) Mary Magdalene represents those often misunderstood or marginalized in our society, including people facing gender identity bias, sexuality discrimination, and ableism—voices too often dismissed despite their humanity.

Tommi Jo Mongold, Troy Dailey, AURIAA, and Christopher Thume portray the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. On the surface they appear as Roman soldiers, but symbolically they represent the modern weapons of control: social media, news cycles, and misinformation—systems capable of manipulating truth through screens and fear.

And Nathanael O’Neal’s Herod carries unmistakable echoes of a certain larger-than-life political figure currently dominating our national stage.

One of the most meaningful moments for me is The Temple. Traditionally, it depicts a holy place corrupted by greed and exploitation. In our production, that sacred space becomes a school—a place meant to be the safest environment for our children. Yet we live in a time when those spaces are repeatedly violated by violence, drugs, trafficking, and political exploitation.

Jesus’ fury in this moment is not merely biblical outrage—it is a reaction to the betrayal of spaces meant to protect the vulnerable. It is a rage that perhaps should belong to all of us.

I hope you enjoy the extraordinary talent on stage tonight. But more than that, I hope you leave thinking about the questions this story asks of all of us.

Make noise. Question everything. Embrace human equality.

And above all—love radically.

Melissa Meyer (Choreographer) has been working with her husband Justin for the past few years to establish and manage their immersive theatrical company, Meyer2Meyer Entertainment. Together, they have had the privilege of working on immersive projects for big names such as Fortnite, Amazon, Netflix, Warner Brothers, and their own shows House of Spirits, Kaleidoscope Experience, and the Bite LA. Before her current role, Melissa was a professional dancer and performed for various regional theatres and cruise ships. She is excited to take a break from her laptop and miles of spreadsheets to pull out her dancing shoes and help bring this musical to life!

Tanya Cyr (Costume Designer) studied under various designers before landing at Meyer2Meyer Entertainment, at the company's inception.  She works year round on all their shows, designing everything from Creature Suits to Costumes.  She is originally from Santa Barbara and wishes to thank her family, especially her father, mother, her brothers and her newly extending family, for their constant support of her artistic adventures!

Jay Michael Roberts (Scenic Designer) grew up in NW Montana, has a degree in architecture and is completing an MFA Scenic Design at the University of Montana. Shout out to Fort Peck, where he’s spent over a decade running the scene shop, and performing. Special thanks to Andy Meyers for his constant support and to Justin and Melissa for including him in this rockstar project.

Matt Merline (Sound Designer) is the resident sound guy for the Nocturne Theater. He runs the ship for any and all sound-related needs. For Hunchback, he recorded and mixed the backup choir.  You can find him crawling around the theater floor plugging things into the wall or buried in a pile of wires. His spare time is spent at the library, playing music, writing and long hikes.

Micah Delhauer (Assistant Lighting Designer/Stage Manager) is both the bee's knees AND the cat's meow. He has been involved with Meyer2Meyer Entertainment since its inception, doing everything from directing to dressing up like giant ice cream cones, and is proud to be assisting with their latest enterprise, the Nocturne Theatre. When not acting as inspiration and mentor to the Meyers, he is also a creator of motion pictures, having just finished his feature debut, Blood Magick. Check out his bad self at:

Michalis Sichnas (Assistant Choreogrpaher) returns to the Nocturne Theatre family to assist Melissa Meyer with choreography for Jesus Christ Superstar, alongside a stellar cast and an amazing creative team. Previously at Nocturne, he performed in Shrek the Musical, Cabaret, Beauty and the Beast, and Madame Scrooge. Other credits include Hello Dolly! at MTW, Fiddler on the Roof at La Mirada Theatre (starring Jason Alexander), A Chorus Line (PVPA), and Newsies (5-Star Theatricals). Michalis also loves working on both the creative and performing sides of the industry.  He dedicates his career to the memory of his mother, the heart behind every step and the light that continues to guide him as he chases his dreams.  Represented by Go 2 Talent Agency.  @michalisrise

Koalani Walkoe (Wardrobe Head) has been with the Nocturne since it's opening season, fulfilling a longtime goal of working in theater costume design. Prior to her time at the Nocturne, she worked in fashion and costume design in her home city of LA for over ten years. She creates and alters costumes for shows in addition to taking care of repairs, quick changes, and costume organization backstage. In her spare time she enjoys wearing her own designs to visit art museums and playing video games with her partner and cat.
