Director's Note

There’s something uniquely magical about stepping into the world of The Little Mermaid. Beneath the surface of its beloved story lies a celebration of imagination itself — of color, movement, music, transformation, and wonder. At The Nocturne Theatre, we wanted this production to feel less like watching a show and more like diving headfirst into a living animated dream.

From the very beginning, this production was built around spectacle — bold, unapologetic, theatrical spectacle. The incredible costume work by Tanya Cyr, Gavin Dietz, and their talented team transforms the stage into an underwater fantasy bursting with personality, texture, and larger-than-life imagination. Every creature, every silhouette, every shimmering detail was crafted with artistry and heart, helping create a world that feels constantly alive.

That same energy flows through the vibrant choreography of Taylor Smith, whose work fills the stage with movement, joy, chaos, comedy, and wonder. This cast throws themselves into every moment with fearless commitment, and Taylor’s choreography gives this production its heartbeat.

Visually, Jay Michael Roberts and Max have created an over-the-top animated playground of a set — colorful, whimsical, and theatrical in all the best ways. Their work embraces the spirit of classic animation while still celebrating the handmade magic of live theatre. Special thanks as well to Sydni Sawyer and Spike Braun for the extraordinary stage and scenic painting work that helped bring every inch of this world to life.

A show like this would never succeed without extraordinary music, and Chris Wade’s tireless work music directing this massive production has been nothing short of remarkable. The energy, warmth, and musicality pouring from this company night after night is a testament to his talent and dedication.

Most importantly, thank you to our cast — who have been endlessly lovely, patient, hilarious, hardworking, and genuinely special throughout this entire process. This truly has been a WHALE of a show, and your positivity, flexibility, and passion made even the most impossible moments feel achievable.

And finally, thank you to my partner in crime, Melissa Meyer, whose tireless efforts continue pushing The Nocturne Theatre to become bigger, bolder, and better every single day. None of this happens without your vision, determination, and heart.

Now dim the lights, dive beneath the waves, and enjoy the adventure.
