Sometimes life surprises you with something delightful! Writing the music for Madam Scrooge has been one of the most fulfilling feats of my musical career.
I have worked with Justin and Melissa Meyer for over a decade. Justin has a unique brilliance for clear, colorful, and compelling language that speaks so well in song. Melissa introduced swirling choreography that keeps the show in constant, cinematic motion. As a composer, there are few collaborators who simply bring out the best of your work time and time again. I am always the best version of myself when working with Justin and Melissa, and I could not pass up the opportunity to write a full-length musical together!
In addition to loving the story of A Christmas Carol, we’ve long wanted to create a show featuring the musical artistry of Stephanie Hodgdon. With the opportunity to create a new musical version of A Christmas Carol, we decided to adapt the original text in order to cast the star we’ve always wanted. Lucky for us, Stephanie was kind enough to say yes, and Madam Scrooge would soon become a reality!
Justin’s adaptations to the original text presented fresh twists on classic characters. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore an array of new musical directions. We took this as an opportunity to have as much fun as we could, and write music specific to each character rather than stick to a singular musical style. From stuffy harpsichords, to industrial machinery, a New Orleans street band, and full orchestras playing holiday classics, this show is a rollercoaster ride of musical madness.
I hope the performances, music, and dance express the joy and excitement all of us felt in the making of this musical. This experience was a relentless tsunami of positivity and creative outpouring that is rare to find in this industry. I’m incredibly grateful to have been a part of this production, and hope you too will be enchanted by this timeless holiday classic!
I am a Christmas fanatic. You’ll catch me watching Hallmark Christmas movies in August. I grew up in Vermont, watching the classic Christmas specials, Rudolph, Frosty, Garfield’s Christmas…with a special affinity for Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Ever since then, it has been my life’s dream to adapt Charles Dickens’ masterpiece into a surreal and stylized musical experience; and I believe that’s exactly what we have done with Madame Scrooge: A Christmas Carol Musical.
I met Chris Thomas around 2010 and I immediately knew I had found a life-long musical collaborator and a life-long friend. My book and lyrics would be nothing but black and white words on a page without Chris’ absolute amazing genius to turn them into musical magic.
I am equally lucky to have the chance to work alongside my wife, Melissa Meyer, whose own level of genius is unparalleled. I always say that she is the engine on the bus, the steering wheel, the frame and I…am the yellow. Without her, nothing in my world happens. All my love to her.
Speaking of 'genius’, of whom I surround myself, I want to give special recognition to Tanya Cyr, whose creature and costume designs give Meyer2Meyer Entertainment its distinct and original look; and to Jay Michael Roberts, whose scenic artistry is beyond comparison! He continues to design such expansive looking sets, even in such a boutique space! We are blessed to have such creative forces on our team.

I want to give one more VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to Kelby Thwaits, who so generously donated the brand new sound system you are hearing tonight! He and Matt Merline have dedicated many hours to get the sound system ready for Madam Scrooge and the rest of our future seasons--and it sounds INCREDIBLE! It was a wonderful gift on his part to our theatre and the Nocturne Theatre family. Kelby, we thank you 50 times!

Finally, to my amazing Cast. Without you, there is no show! It has been an honor and privilege to direct you..and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
Merry Christmas and Bless Us, Everyone!
