He is humbled to be able to use his talents for Meyer2Meyer and the Nocturne Theater.

DESIGNER NOTES

Koalani Walkoe (Costume Designer): The Romeo and Juliet themed dance presented a challenge in combining the productions unique aesthetics for the Jets and Sharks with classical Elizabethan fashion. By costume pieces emblematic of that era as well as more modern silhouettes and the Jets and Sharks colors we were able to create looks that suggest the theme without being too literal for two groups of high schoolers.

Director's Note

West Side Story is the only show this season that I was nervous to direct!

It is such a beloved musical with a rich history and incredibly important cultural identity, that I felt I needed to tread very delicately when it came to putting my own stamp on it.  I didn't want to change anything that would take away important significance to the story, script or represented cultures, but I didn't want to just re-produce the typical version we have all seen in the movies, on Broadway and in every High School nation-wide.

The first significant change was to make the vibe slightly more gritty.  We accomplished that by setting certain iconic scenes underground, in the NYC Subway, introducing an added element of danger and close quarters fighting.  Jay Michael Roberts' brilliantly conceptualized design creates a very versatile set that not only places us in the dingy cold subways of the upper West Side of Manhattan, but easily transforms into the more traditional 50's Soda-Pop Shop setting for Doc's.

The second significant change was in the style of choreography, conceptualized by the amazingly creative Melissa Schade (and her associate choreographer, Mackenzey Franklin).  They did an amazing job nodding to the Jerome Robbins classic choreography, but managed to completely modernize the biggest dance moments in the show, leaning into her wild and weird side, which is the whole reason we wanted to bring her on board for this show in the first place! It was SUCH a pleasure to work with them and we will be seeing a lot more from them in the near future at The Nocturne.

The third change we made was to reimagine the costuming for the show.  A big shout-out to our Costume Designer, Koalani Walkoe.  Koalani has been on the sewing team, backstage and the quick-change team for many of our shows at the Nocturne and I am very excited to see her in the driver's seat with her very innovative costuming! Her 'gang' looks for both Jets and Sharks gives us a more apocalyptic Warriors vibe, which also feeds back to the gritty concept.  She did a particularly great job with the costumes for the Dance At The Gym, using Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as inspiration and giving the show a few scenes of that well-known Nocturne Theatre fantasy costuming!

Big thank you to Nolan Monsibay, who got all these amazing dancers to find their courage and their voices to SING! His guidance with these vocals was critical, as Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim are not easy scores or lyrics to tackle.

Of course, none of these things would possible without the amazing leadership of Melissa Meyer, who gave us all lots of room to play and create, but also was a vital set of outside eyes on the project, which greatly helped with staging and ideas in that last big push of tech week.  Thank you for keeping the quality high!

To my outstanding cast, I am beyond thrilled to have had this opportunity to work with you and get to know you all.  You were kind, creative, patient and above all, SO GOOD! Thank you for kicking off the Nocturne Theatre's 2025 season with a bang! You've set the bar very high.

I hope you enjoy the show!
